  1. hey equinox, just wanna ask u some qns abt kyung hee.

do u happen to know if we get to choose the hostel that we want to stay in if we go there? or isit randomly allocated? i understand that they have 3/4(?) hostels available.

also, how's the workload like? do u guys have classes for the whole day?

i'm going to KAIST next sem for exchange & am planning to take korean at kyung hee. but of course, that's dependent on the timings of my classes as KAIST.

btw, do u happen to know how far KAIST is away from Kyung Hee? it looks quite near on the map, but i'm not sure if its so.

    thanks! :)

  2. Hi Jean, congrats to yr successful application :D

I believe you are going to the KAIST's College of Business in Seoul. I can't be very sure if it is very near to KHU but yup, it does look very near in the map. Then again, it can't be that far since it is located along Hoegiro. Perhaps you can check with Kaye.

You are allowed to choose from any of the four KHU's dormitory but subject to availability of course. The occupancy rate is quite high though. I do feel that the dormitory fee is a bit ex. Again, I think Kaye is in a better position to advise you on accommodation.

Daily language lessons in KHU starts at 9am and ends at 1pm. There may be cultural class in some of the afternoons. As for workload, I am not too sure about that since I am not a regular student there.

Look forward to you being in Seoul :)

  3. hey equinox, thanks! :) btw, i was wondering if u know where i can get my hands on the kyung hee intermediate 1 textbook? i'm planning to do some self study so that i can go into intermediate 2 when i go over. do u think its possible in such a short span of time? i'll probably be starting lessons in the spring semester. how's intermediate 2 like? i heard from ms chi that there's loads of grammar in the intermediate level.

    thanks! :)

  4. You may get it at SKS. Perhaps, you can drop by SKS next Tue evening. They sell the textbook in the admin office at ground level. As next Tue is the start of a new semester, do expect queue to form as students queue up to pay course fee and buy textbook. However, I am not too sure if they will sell the book to non-student. Maybe you can pretend to be a student :X

It can be a bit hard to do self study using the textbook as it doesn't come with English explanation. So it may be difficult for you to understand the grammar. From my experience, Kyunghee Intermediate I level can be quite challenging for NEX level 6 student.

I doubt you can master Intermediate I level within a short span of time unless you attend lesson everyday and do your homework regularly. I thought it is also rather ambitious for you to jump straight into Intermediate level II. I definitely wouldn't recommend you to do that as students, who are in this level, tend to be in a relatively advanced stage of proficiency.

Maybe you should just relax for the time-being and let your placement test results decide which level is appropriate for you. You can enjoy the lesson better if you start at a level that you are comfortable with.

Just like what you said, Intermediate level has loads of grammar, more than a hundred of them (Int I and II combined). The grounding in grammar is in Int level.

Hope this is of help. You are welcome to ask more. ^^

  5. Yup, books published for use in classroom would not be ideal for self-study.
The Ganada series of Korean textbook is supposed to be more suited for self-study.

Sogang's free online site has a fair bit of grammar.

BTW, Equinox, you dont check your Hotmail? I emailed you about 한글날 모임.

  7. Is that so? BTW Equinox will never show up because it doesn't exist in the real world. The rest is anyone's guess. ^^
