'ㅎ'의 약화

This post is about the 'weakening' of the 'ㅎ' sound. Below are 3 situations when 'ㅎ' sound is weakened and omitted.

'ㅎ' comes after vowels or consonant 'ㄴ', 'ㅁ', 'o' and 'ㄹ'

When 'ㅎ' comes after vowels or consonant 'ㄴ', 'ㅁ', 'o' and 'ㄹ', the 'ㅎ' sound is weakened and not pronounced.

Example:
지하절 (subway) - [지아절]
문화 (culture) - [무놔]
암호 (secret code) - [아모]
영화 (movie) - [영와]
팔호선 (line 8) - [파로선]

Batchim 'ㅎ', 'ㄶ' and 'ㅀ' meets vowel

When a vowel comes after the batchim 'ㅎ', 'ㄶ' and 'ㅀ', the 'ㅎ' sound is not pronounced.

Example:
쌓이다 - [싸이다]
많이 - [마니]
싫어 - [시러]

Batchim 'ㅀ' meets 'ㄴ'

When 'ㄴ' comes after batchim 'ㅀ', the 'ㅎ' sound is weakened and omitted while 'ㄴ' is lateralised (see lateralisation) to 'ㄹ'.

Example:
닳는 (worn out) - [달른]
뚫는 (punch, pierce or break through) - [뚤른]

  5. I love the pronunciation guides, though I may have difficulty remembering.

Did you learnt them all in your classes or on your own? During my basics years back, it was not covered in class or textbook. I had to search the web for info.
